I’m a less is more kind of girl and stylist. Sounds contradictory when I specialize in extensions and enhancements? Actually, spending a little more time in the salon in spaced out visits actually leads to less time in the salon in the long run and less time at home!
This applies to my color clients as well… because generally custom color goes hand in hand with extensions and enhancements. I do, however, have just color clients as well. So when my clients start getting their first greys, or maybe they’ve had greys but they want to color them for the first time, I generally do anything I can to avoid jumping straight into permanent color. There’s nothing ‘wrong’ with permanent color, but every choice comes with a cause and effect, and some of the ‘effects’ of permanent color are: a heavier demarcation line {or roots to maintain}, permanent exposure of underlying warmth, difficulties in lightening and future color change, etc. Also, once you apply that darker permanent color, there’s no easy way to go back if or when a guest decides that permanent color’s not for them.
Instead, grey blending is my preferred choice. This process is great for those who are tired of seeing a harsh demarcation line every 2-4 weeks, but also aren’t ready to fully embrace their greys just yet. A demi base is the perfect in-between allowing a blending of that grey grow in with the natural tone in the rest of the hair. I do this for an all over application, but it also applies to my guests who come in for a ‘grey coverage/root touch up’ service. This is a unique hair coloring technique that differs a bit depending on whether we’re doing an all over blending service or a root touch up, but in either case allows us to slowly work in the greys as they appear, blending them with either the guest’s overall hair color or natural-looking highlights that mimic the natural tone so they can embrace more grey throughout.

CHOOSING GREY BLENDING
Maybe you’re not ready to go all grey, or you like some dimension in your hair color, this technique is perfect for those. Possibly, you want to stay natural without committing to a whole new look, or you love a low-maintenance color regimen. Again, grey blending is the perfect option.

ASKING YOUR STYLIST FOR GREY BLENDING
Grey blending can be done on any original color, from dark brown to bright blonde. While it tends to work most easily on lighter shades, I’ve been doing it on my darker clients ever since I can remember, and it’s so beautiful. Transitioning from opaque permanent color to a translucent Demi may require some corrective work to break up the line of demarcation so that the new Demi base will blend, but each guest is unique and will be assessed. As a colorist, I’ll guide you in the right direction when it comes to formula, technique, and distribution of color.
MAINTAINING GREY BLENDING
Maintaining grey blending is much simpler than maintaining a full color treatment. While the timeline differs for each guest, visits to the salon can be spaced out, and the best part is this low-maintenance color treatment helps maintain your hair’s integrity, decreasing the potential for damage as it ages. As always, I’m a huge advocate for hair and scalp health! At home maintenance routines are fairly simple as well.
